Crafting Shoes Never Meant to Be Walked In

Last week at the Venice Biennale, the milliner Giuliana Longo wore gold earrings in the shape of hats as she showed off a hat sculpture made of natural agave. Ms. Longo, who has worked as a milliner since 1969, said through a translator that she fell in love with hats because “if you wear a hat, you become a different person.”Dotted with 500 “pebbles,” each hand stitched to the fabric, the hat was in fact not just a hat but a tribute to a shoe: the Tod’s Gommino driving shoe, a hand-stitched loafer in leather or suede with rubber pebbles on the bottom and back that make it look a bit like a soft, chic cleat. Tod’s, the Italian leather goods and fashion company, had assembled 11 Venetian craftsmen to interpret the Gommino using their own tools and artistry. The works, created by Venetian glassblowers, mask makers and other artisans, were exhibited at a cocktail party on April 19. At an airy warehouse across the canal from the Italian Pavilion, craftspeople stood proudly by their work.

CNN —In the seven centuries since the Ponte Vecchio was first built in Florence, Italy, the bridge has watched the city changing around it, surviving floods, fires and the Nazi invasion in World War II. Now, the famed bridge itself is getting a two-year makeover, at the cost of about €2 million, to restore it to its former glory, the city of Florence and the Marchesi Antinorini winemakers announced on Wednesday. “This is a historic project because Ponte Vecchio has never had a restoration intervention of this technical complexity,” Florence’s mayor Dario Nardella told reporters on Thursday. Such is the Ponte Vecchio’s significance that it was the only bridge across the Arno River spared by the retreating German army towards the end of World War II. Previous replacement joints will be upgraded, the stone itself will be strengthened and the footpath’s stone will be restored too.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

IN NEWS sure to leave biker gangs uncharacteristically tearful, leather pants are threatening to go bougie. Long a bad-boy symbol, hide trousers have been transformed by high fashion this fall. They’re being proposed as a suave, sensual and comfortable alternative to chinos, cargo pants and tailored trousers. Some feature high waists to elongate legs or pleats to conjure old-school élan worthy of Cary Grant. Nick Paget, senior menswear strategist at trend forecasting firm WGSN, attributes the leather look to a post-Covid desire for sensual dressing.

Investors looking ahead to 2024 should pick up shares of Hermes , Cartier owner Richemont and Hugo Boss in the luxury goods sector, according to UBS. The Swiss investment bank has a bullish call on those three stocks, though it struck a more cautious tone for the sector. RMS-FR CFR-CH,BOSS-DE YTD line UBS has a price target of 85 euros ($93) a share for Hugo Boss, which points to a 38% upside from the current share price. The Swiss bank also raised its price target for Hermes to 2,216 euros, which is 12% above its current share price. The outlook for the three stocks contrasts with UBS' view that slowing sales momentum and easing pricing power warrant caution on the luxury sector on the whole.

Construction of new apartment buildings is slowing as interest rates stay high. The Department of Transportation is opening up billions in loans for construction near mass transit. AdvertisementMultifamily housing construction boomed over the last couple years, and more apartments are coming on the market than at any time since the 1980s. But as interest rates have shot up, apartment construction is sharply slowing across the country. In fact, in order to qualify for the loans, developers need to show that their projects would boost ridership.

Bank of America upgraded three luxury stocks that are bucking the negative trends afflicting the broader sector in Europe. The investment bank expects profit margins to decline by one percentage point for the sector even as third-quarter revenue is seen growing modestly. Meanwhile, the investment bank upgraded Ermenegildo Zegna and Pandora to buy, and Hugo Boss to neutral from underperform. The investment bank believes a similar pattern will likely emerge in Europe with spending on the continent peaking early this year. Despite Pandora shares' 45% rally this year, the Bank of America analyst still considers it "one of the cheapest stocks in all of Consumer Discretionary."

View of the Colosseum dungeons which have been restored in a multi-million euro project sponsored by fashion group Tod's in Rome, Italy, June 24 2021. The operation will continue next week, the city government said in a statement, cleaning up the green areas surrounding the Colosseum, the drains where the rats are commonplace, and laying traps. There are around 7 million rats in the city, the statement said, or 2.5 for every inhabitant. City hall issued photos of cleaning staff collecting heaps of plastic water bottles, drink cans and other debris against the backdrop of an illuminated Colosseum. Built 2,000 years ago, the Colosseum was the biggest amphitheatre in the Roman empire and was used to host gladiator fights, executions and animal hunts.

Hollywood’s track record for portraying people with disabilities has been sketchy at best. There have been inspirational figures, noble martyrs and lovable oddballs — some of these performances garnering Academy Awards — but there aren’t a lot of people simply living their lives. The search for truly resonant disability representation in the history of cinema is continuing, but over the decades, many scholars keep returning to a perhaps surprising touchstone: a 91-year-old film set in a circus. Tod Browning’s most widely known work is “Dracula” (1931), starring Bela Lugosi, but the next year, he broke new ground with a movie featuring an extensive cast of actors with disabilities. Browning’s “Freaks” (available on most major platforms) centers on a close-knit group of circus sideshow performers who rally around a friend after he is betrayed by his lover, a trapeze artist.

Astronomers found two renegades, runaway white dwarf stars on an escape route out of our galaxy. These runaway stars are on a one-way ticket out of our galaxy. Runaway stars racing away at breakneck speedsIn the new study, astronomers using data from the European Space Agency's Gaia survey identified two runaway stars with the fastest radial velocities ever seen. Two white dwarf stars orbiting each other can trigger an especially enormous explosion called a D^6 supernova. The first explosion kicks off when one of the white dwarf stars accumulates too much helium gas, which triggers a thermonuclear explosion, reported Starr.

Our reviewer, Bette Pesetsky, called “London Fields” “a picaresque novel rich in its effects,” a “virtuoso depiction of a wild and lustful society. Milan CNN —The design world’s largest annual fair enjoyed a return to full pre-pandemic form with its 2023 showcase, transforming the city of Milan with hundreds of exhibitions, site-specific installations, pop-ups and public projects. Almost everywhere, the focus was on sustainable design, circular economy, material innovation and artistry combining craft with innovation. Some of the most interesting ideas were those that looked at waste – literally – to rethink what design can do when it uses what is already there. Shown in various stages of decomposition, the chair challenged viewers to approach products with the end of their lifecycle in mind. The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, called EHT, is a global network of telescopes that captured the first photograph of a black hole. Computers using PRIMO analyzed more than 30,000 high-resolution simulated images of black holes to pick out common structural details. But if heated materials in the form of plasma surround the black hole and emit light, the event horizon could be visible.
